Congrats on your new hones. I'm sure you'll enjoy the many miles you put on them.

I did my mini-test on Lynn's hones. I did 12 Dovos 1, 3, 8, 12, .5-diamond, strop, and 12 more 1, 3, 8, 12, .5-diamond, strop. Each was honed with the same "method," just different hones. I liked the ones off the 5 more. Maybe with more time on the 8 after the 3 they'd shave the same, I'm not sure cause I didn't try. It could be that the method I used is optimized for 1, 5, 8, 12 - but since it's the method I already know, I bought the hones to fit it. I'm cool with spending an extra $20 or whatever the difference is in order to not have to experiment. If one was to experiment, I'm sure you could do 1, 3, 8, 12 just as fast as with the 5 and get edges just as good.
Thanks Joe, I'll bring them with me next time, or have them ready to rock should you be at my place before I'm at yours. Haha, literally miles, judging by the number of razors I have lying around at the moment.

I bought them all and looking at the Japanese grit chart I saw that the 3/5 seemed to be equivalent to a 4/8 American grit. So set bevels with the 1k and I like the Naniwa 1k better than any other 1k BTW .. I did the 3/5 and found that I could shave off of that just like a Norton 4/8.
The 5 seems to cut faster than the 3 by the amount of swarf but whatever, it is working real well for me. I finish on the Naniwa 8 and rarely go to the 12 though I do once in awhile. I haven't used the 2 at all and the 10 only a couple of times. Not enough to have an impression. One way or the other I went back to the Shapton pros for a couple of razors but I really like the feel of the Naniwas better.
That circle followed by x strokes that Lynn is doing now is the cat's whiskers. I don't see myself going back to the pyramids I like it so much. Whatever works though, different strokes and all of that.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Probably more strokes on the 8k would make up for the 5k being finer than the 3 (closer to 20 instead of 10), methinks. Should be fun to play around with when I get it. I probably won't do any pyramids, but then again, maybe finicky razors (thinking tricky stainless like the CS Filarmonica) might like it....

Gotta play to win. Have fun, and share your findings.

Definitely will--I'm getting the hard felt strop w/ diamond spray along with it, so it should be fun! Probably won't order till the end of the month, though. I'll definitely let you know how my barber's razors turn out.

Thanked: 45I have the Nani 1k, 5k, 8k, and 12k
1. I do like to restore some antique store finds, which means serious bevel setting. Is it worthwhile to add the 3k?
2. I know a lot of folks like the Shapton 16k. Would that add that much for someone coming off at Nani 12k? Right now I finish with the Nani 12k, then go to CrOx pasted balsa before webbing and latigo (sometimes finishing with horse). Is there any value in inserting the Shapton 16k in there?
