Help with hone identity.
Hello resident experts & disciples alike!
I've just won the hone below. No measurements on the hone itself, but the box measures 9 1/8" x 3".
First thoughts are Charnley, due to the reddish streaks. They may well be rust though.
Any ideas anyone?

Certainly looks like a Charnley to me.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

All of the charnleys I have seen are a pale olive(greenish) color, that looks more like an escher(maybe) with rust or some other stain. Clean it up and lets have another look!
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanks for the replies!
I'll get some more up when i have it & it's lapped. I'm guessing the stone itself is around 8" x 2".
It wasn't a big gamble & should be interesting to see what it is. I've started to get a touch of HAD recently!

Thanked: 132Hey Ben. Congrats on the HAD and the stone. He, he..
I noticed that hone, when it was up and photoshopped it, etc...i'm fairly certain it is not a Charnley, but i have been wrong before...once. lol
Thanks,
Mac

Thanked: 3164It does lok a bit wide for a charnely, but they aren't all olive green - the greyish ones are said to be superior...
Fingers crossed that it is!

Thanked: 132Hello Neil,
I was viewing that hone, on your site a bit earlier today...does it have dark blue speckles throughout the stone...with the darker/grayish substrate? Ive a couple that look like that as well.
Thanks,
Mac

Ben, when I saw that stone at Ebay I got excited as well thinking it was a cheap Charnley Forest. Unfortunately it resembles those used orange india oilstones almost perfectly. Hopefully it's a natural but I don't think it is.

Thanked: 3164Hi Mac,
It did have darker speckles - not sure if you would call them blue, though, as well as an underlying kind of three-dimensional effect, only properly seen when it was wet - a kind of 3D effect below the surface.
The picture doesn't do it justice - makes it look grainy whereas it was quite smooth and glassy when wet.
There was also a hair-thin red vein at one end, again only visible when wet.
Regards,
Neil
