Thanks to all who responded. Anyone hone anything else up recently? If so, please tell us about it! Pics are optional.

A Thistle cut and an Engstrom will be getting honed up tonight... I'm excited about both of them!

From the bay, this Wester Bros 11/16 bone manganese steel was in my mailbox when I got home from work last night. Appears to have been used little if at all with no hone wear. I am going to hone it up this morning before I go into work. I will set the bevel with the naniwa 1k and then decide whether to go natural, naniwa, shapton pro or norton. Decisions , decisions.
EDIT; set the bevel with the naniwa 1k using circles and x strokes until the edge on this particular one popped hair on my inside forearm. Decided on natural and used a coticule combo. Started with the bbw with slurry doing x strokes. I'm not sure how many strokes but between the TPT and popping hair on my leg (I don't want to go bald on my arms like the old days) I knew when to go to the yellow. At the time I judged I had what I needed out of the yellow I went to a dark blue escher just because. Smooth and comfortable 2 pass shave with cold water.Last edited by JimmyHAD; 03-30-2010 at 03:36 PM.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I honed a nice, new Japanese-style razor that I have been holding onto for a while -- a "New Azuma" with the additional stamps for "Yazuki Steel" on the side with the writing (ura or omote, I can never remember which).
I used my go-to honing stone -- a small coticule/BBW combo stone that I bought here. The small size is just about perfect to use with these small Japanese razors.
For finishing, I used a new CF hone that I got last month. I have lots of other finishers now, but the CF just works like a dream and gives the edge a mirror-like polish with not one hint of haziness.

Last week:
- 2 GDs
- 4/8" Shumate Barber
In the queue this week:
- W&B 6/8" Wedge
- W&B 4/8" Wedge (chip removal)
- Shortened Vintage Dovo 4/8"
- Mini Frank Warner (very interesting blade)
- A few more restored by another fellow here in Calgary
One advantage of honing razors for folks is that I don't
have to own many myself to try out a nice variety

We started this lot last weekend where CarrieM and I made scales and cleaned up the blades on the buffers. Most of the blades were local finds and needed some restoration. During the week I set the bevels on all of them and yesterday Jr and I finished the honing. Now they are ready for test shaves.
I started by setting the bevels on a 1k Naniwa Chosera as I am still familiarizing myself with these hones. All except for 4 took tool a bevel set in no time. Torrey, a Pipe wedgie, a W.H. Butler wedgie and a George Butler wedgie just wouldn't take an edge over the entire length of the blade. Switched to the Norton 1k and they snapped to in short order. From there Jr work the blades on the Naniwa 5k and 8k and I worked the wedgies along with a few of the hollow goinds on the Norton 4k and 8k. From there I gave them a few laps on the narrow coti and finished on the C12k while Jr used the 8x3 coti and the Escher. CarrieM gave them the final QC for cutting prior to stropping and all are popping hairs.
The razors from left to right are: Worstenholm Pipe semi wedge, JR Torrey (rescaled), Larkin, WH Oates semi wedge (rescaled), George Butler semi wedge (an older purchase but refinished scales and buffed blade), Mahers and Grosh ( another older purchase rescaled and buffed), JR Torrey (rescaled), Wostenholm Pipe (rescaled) and a Genco Henry's X that I started a while ago.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Thanked: 2591Great set up Joe,
I like my 1k chosera , try with slurry it becomes considerably faster.
For more tough jobs I use 600 Chosera, it works great.Stefan
