Thanked: 43Where to buy a Chinese 12k in Canada?
Hi All!
I'm thinking about buying a 12k for a finishing stone (I have the Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000 stones), but the shipping costs are abysmal to get it to Canada from Woodcraft.
I've tried looking at Leevalley Tools, but haven't had any luck; can anyone suggest a decent place to find a 12k in Canada for a reasonable price? (for reference, it's going for ~$35 at Woodcraft)
Thanks!

Just for interests sake, how much is shipping to Canada?

I've tried Lee Valley as well. They are not set up to work with razor enthusiasts, only knife enthusiasts. They top out at 8000.
I haven't purchased a 12000 yet, but when I do I know I will need to order from an online source.

Thanked: 43I've pretty much come to the same conclusion, Desdinova, though even ordering from Leevalley is online for me. I was just hoping to find a Canadian company that might ship cheaper...Mind you, that might not be feasible, as I often see Canadian companies charging more to ship in Canada than to the States...
For Brantd: I think shipping was roughly the same as the stone itself, IIRC; it made a stone that is $35 with free shipping in CONUS into a $70 stone here.

I have one of the Woodcraft 12K stones and it works quite well. Slow cutter so I usually take my 600dmt diamond plate and give it 3 or 4 swirls around the stone like I am lapping it to work up a light slurry and it takes about half as many passes that way.
I believe a small flat rate priority box to Canada is around $12. I would be willing to pick one up at my local Woodcraft (you know you go there to much when they know your voice over the phone) and drop it in the mail to you. You would just have to paypal me the cost of the stone and shipping. PM me if you are interested.

Shipping is just astronomical no matter where you ship these days. Normally, the US Postal Service is cheapest. I recently shipped a stone to Japan. USPS Express Mail was about 44.00 with something called "Shipsurance, another 7.00 usd.
UPS wanted 88.00 USD to ship the same box in the same manner. Fedex wanted 102.00 USD. It's insane...
For some reason, Shipping from the US to Canada is always expensive. A small flat rate box from the Post Office should be 12.00, no insurance, no tracking.
Another thing, If you use US Postal Service insurance, it ends at the border....Just FYI....We have assumed control !

Thanked: 43Wow--thanks for all the replies, and particularly to CannonFodder for the offer!
I think I may actually go for the stone from Poland. The only downside I can see with it is that it's a smaller stone than the one I was looking at from Woodcraft (I was thinking about the 2 3/4" wide stone), but it's stupid cheap, and comes with another stone for slurry--which is good b/c I don't actually have a lapping plate to use with it (though thanks for that tip too, CF!).
I'll let you guys know what it's like when it arrives! Thanks again for all the help!

Thanked: 20Yep. I got lucky and bought one from a fellow friend from Toronto.. (he got lucky to find it). Another option, if you live close to the border, is to have it shipped to a mail forwarding company. I'm in Montreal and I get some stuff shipped to Freeport Forwarding in Champlain, NY... about a 45 min drive. Cost 2$ per package. I only use it when I need something special only shipped by UPS or for big sales you usually have in the US.
(ie. Amazon had something I wanted for 99$ + Free shipping. Whereas it would be about 215$ here...)
