Winner hone?
Not just something I won on Ebay...that's the brand, "Winner." Anybody ever heard of it? White on one side, red on the other. I've tried it for a couple of touch ups and it did it's job. I lapped it and beveled it on both sides. What's really cool is I bought this hone back in Feb. and last week I found a razor by the same name.

Never heard of the hones, but I have one of their razors. In the midst of honing her, actually.

Thanked: 3795I've got one of each as well, but I never made the connection before. If I remember it correctly, the white side was harder than average to lap.

I had a hone just like it but without the box. Worked just as it should, so it went with a member to afganistan, hopefully it was useful to him while there.

Mine was the opposite. The white side lapped fairly easily. The red side, still has a little bit of dish in in in the center, even after 3 sheets of 220 sandpaper. it either had a heck of a lot of dish, or it's slow to lap.
Last night, I decided to take on the challenge of the instruction on the box. It said it could make ANY razor shave ready, so I took the Winner razor pictured to the brown side for about an hour, with water. it started off steak knife sharp (just a pinch better than a butter knife) and now has a noticeable edge and is darned close to cutting hairs off the skin. I'd say another 5 or 6 hours and I might be ready for a the white side....maybe

Probably most of the barber hones you see were made by the same company in Iowa as I recall. They made them and put the names on them and had the dies for the various companies. Leftovers were all sold off not too long ago along with the name dies.

Thanked: 0I realize that this is an old thread, but since I found so little on Winner' Hones online, I thought I'd upload these for posterity. I haven't seen this box design anywhere else. I bought it for $20 from someone on Craigslist who in turn bought it from an estate sale

I have the exact same hone. Someone told me the white side was a Washita, but I don't know the truth to that or not.
What's weird is the white side seems courser than the red side to me, but the instructions on my box say to use the red side first and the white side second.
Interesting little hone, and how wierd, because I pulled it out of the stash tonight and was experimenting a little with it, then I come across this thread... Strange .
Enjoy it, and thanks for the pics!!
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --

Thanked: 0Glad you liked the pics. Mine definitely feels courser on the red side. Hmmm. This is my first try at straight razor shaving. And as soon as I heal up I'm going to give it my second try. This site helped tremendously in information. Based on what I read here I bought a quality entry level shaver. A "Best Quality" Dovo. So thanks to all the posters here. You guys are a great resource.

The way a hone removes metal has little to do with the how rough the surface is, which is what your fingers feel. I'd go with the instructions, but even if you do it the other way around you will figure out the correct way quickly by how the razor shaves. The difference to the edge off both size should be considerable, otherwise they would've gone with a simpler single material hone.
Always nice to get those oldies in a good condition, enjoy!
