New Hones: ID help? (pic heavy)
Bought a lot off e-bay of about 11 hones, 4 of them ended up being naturals. About 2 hours of lapping later, and I ended up with 4 nice flat stones (6 if you count the bbw sides of the cotis!). The Dark blue escher and Chinese 12k are in the pictures for color comparison.
2 of them are Coti/BBW combos, and then a large 6.2 x 2.2 x 1 (unknown #1) and a thin little 6.1 x 1.4 x .2 (unknown #2). i suspect unknown #2 is a Thuringen. as for #1... Wow, interesting! I'd love to hear any input. It feels slightly more coarse than a BBW to the touch. that might not mean anything though.
OK..lots of pics. I'd LOVE to hear any comments on unknown #1 and unknown #2!!!!! The coti's...are so different too. I'm not much of a hone guy, what can I expect from these two cotis?
I'll get around to testing them soon.

Thanked: 1371Brad, I don't know what your mystery hones are, but if the colors of the coticules in the first and last pictures are true to life (as opposed to the colors in the 2nd and 3rd pictures) you have some good ones IMO. (of course the only way to know for sure is to use them, but I have never had a creamy colored coticule that I didn't like)
((for reference of anyone reading this thinking "I HAVE TO HAVE A CREAMY COLORED COTICULE, bear in mind that I've only used about 20 coticules total, and only about 5 of those were creamy colored... YMMV))
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

I dunno, unknown 2 look yellow green to me up against the others. Great haul though.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yes, the first and last are more representative of their colors. I was just snapping with a point and shoot..not my slr..so..color balance was all over the place
Thanks for the comments HNSB!

First of all, congratulations on your really nice win on eBay! I am looking at two Eschers of mine right now and comparing them to your unknown #1 stone. I believe you have an Escher or other Thuringian stone. The dimensions are longer and narrower than my two Eschers, but they look to be the same type of stone. Just my .02-I am no expert and don't have that many Eschers for comparison. Have you attempted to raise slurry on the two unknown stones? If either is an Escher or Thuringian, you should be able to easily raise a light colored creamy slurry. Thanks for the excellent photos!

Brad,
Do you have any side or bottom pics of unkown #1?
I think that might help a little.

This is what it looked like when I got it. It was a completely different color underneath all that oil. The stone has been repaired...glue of some sort. luckily, both faces were perfectly intact after it had been dropped/cracked. If this is some crazy amazing hone..I could technically split it again and have two if I could come up with a backing for them
