Aloxite razor hone
Today I fount this in an antique store. It is in pretty good shape but on the back (the side i would prefer to use) it has some scratches that worry me. They are not crazy deep, but deep enough to feel when I run my finger nail over them. I suspect someone used the hone to sharpen their dart points, or something like that.
If I was to try lapping this hone on wet and dry paper what grit would you recommend? Or is this impossible? I just worry that the scratches may damage my edge slightly.

Thanked: 3795I'm a little puzzled why you would post a photo of the front of the hone when your concern is regarding the back. Regardless, in general scratches in a hone are inconsequential. You will know in a single round trip on the hone whether or not the scratches have any effect. If you don't hear or feel any out of place resistance, then the hone is fine.
If you do want to remove the scratches, I guess I'd start around 320 grit and see how it goes. It really depends upon the depth of the scratches.

If you can feel the scratches with you thumbnail, you should probably lap them out. There is a good article on lapping in the wiki here:

Thanked: 3795The fact that you can feel the scratches with your thumbnail is irrelevant to the function of the hone. The issue is whether or not any part of the scratch is above the surface of the hone and hits the blade. If the scratches are only below the surface and do not contact the blade, then they have no effect on the function of the hone and there is no need to remove them.

Thanked: 2209I agree with Utopian. Try 1-2 laps, if the scratches are going to have a negative impact you will feel it right away.

Thanked: 247If it were mine, I would lap it as a last resort. Some hones (though I am not familiar with this brand) can become friable and basically worthless if lapped (it's like they have a skin that, once broken, allows the hone to crumble).
Yours may or may not be that sort...but it would be a shame to find out it is after lapping it
