Thanked: 8I have the Naniwa 10K specifically for refreshing my straights every 3 or 4 weeks. 10K/12K either/or. Both will do what you and I want. Nap the stone when you get it, it won't need much after that based on your projected/my actual use. That's it. Relax and enjoy. I find nothing more relaxing than tuning up my kitchen knives on a combo stone I got especially for the kitchen (a bit like in Layer Cake when the gangster explains breaking down and reassembling his handgun helps him meditate).

Aside from the information you receive here, you are more than welcome to PM me and I'll let you try some different things to see what fits your fancy.
I have a complete set of Naniwa hones including the 12k, Keen Kutter barber hone, jnat, Escher and a pasted strop. For the most part, the barber hone, the 12k and the pasted strop is what you would be looking for.
If you get a hone, I also have the DGLP, Naniwa lapping plates and the DMT325 if you need any lapping done until you can get your own.

Interesting thread.
When I joined in 2006 I asked a similar question. At the time coticules, Eschers and 8K Norton were the favourite hones.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.

Reading your first post, I think you still need a basic strop. Nothing takes the place of regular stropping on a good fabric and leather strop. You'll use the stone about every 5-7 shaves, but you strop before every shave.
The stone makes the razor cut, the strop makes it easy on your face.

I have no experience if Naniwas so i would pick up Chinese 12K. It's cheap, and using it with or without slurry gives different results. Coticules are maybe ok too but i've found that -at least for me- C12K is a better finisher than coti.

Thanked: 39I agree with Jim “for this express request “, the Naniwa 12K is the answer. I have the Naniwas and the naturals. Many are better than the Naniwa 12 K , but for consistency it can’t be beat, as naturals will vary. I lap on Diamond plate, but a single sheet of wet dry paper will work for lapping & deglazing.
I am assuming Nightblade, has a strop already. You might want to try a nylon strop before the leather, again elegantly simple and effective. Almost any nylon will give impressive results.
But Jim, Really I do understand your nefarious intentions, I see you, rubbing your hands in a ball… once the hook is set…
