Thanked: 1072Star Brand
Can anyone tell me anything about this hone. I just picked it up at an Antiques Fair for $40. It measures 150mm x 30mm aprox 6" x 1 1/4", and is about 17mm thick. Needs a good lapping but looks in good condition. It seems to be glued in the box. Is that normal? wont the box deteriorate from water being used in honing.
I also saw a Carborumdum 101 6"x2" hone but that was $85 and seemed a bit pricey to me."I aint like that no more...my wife, she cured me of drinking and wickedness"

Looks like a Thurry to me. Not sure about how the water will affect the box, but if it was me, I'd try to find a way to get it out (without breaking anything).

Very nice find, congratulations! Looks like a Thuringian to me also. Same stone as Escher. Getting it wet might loosen the stone in the box so you can remove it, otherwise I don't know a safe method. You will need to lap it and to acquire a similar grit Thuringian/Escher rubbing stone, which may be available on eBay or from an SRP member. I bought one from a seller in Poland, which was advertised as Thuringian and about 10K grit. Worked fine for raising slurry on an Escher. You will start enjoying smoother and closer shaves soon.
