Preserving Escher Label
I recently bought an Escher water stone at a good price from an antiques / collectables dealer. There are a few scratches that will lap out without much trouble, but it is basically unused. The label is in very good condition and entirely readable. I wondered if painting a coat of clear lacquer (Estapol?) over the label will help preserve it? Would this compromise the value of the stone? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Polyurethane is the way to go. Lacquer is too brittle and will crack with age. Polyurethane stays pliant and stable for decades, and if it gets scratched up, you can just sand it and slap on another coat. Whatever you do, do NOT paint on clear nail polish. I know some guys use it, but the chemistry of nail polish is really, really not set up for a durable, long lasting, crack free finish.
