The Norton1K
Many of us have searched for natural and synthetic alternatives for razor bevel settings. While not considered a very exotic stone, the Norton 1K performance is awesome. It is quick and does not break down so fast as to need frequent lapping. At the same time, it does not load up and glaze as well. It does well on every type of metal that I have fed it.
The more I sharpen, the more I am convinced that the Norton 1K convinced that for verisitility and utility of the 1K has been done right. Freshly lapped or with slurry, it can be made to move lots of metal fast. When smoothed over against a 4K Norton it does an honorable job with the razor for a great start for quick progression up to higher grits without leaving deep scratches for the next stone in progression.
We all know how important it is to start our honing with a chip free sound edge and the Norton 1K is always comes through time after time.

Thanked: 3795It was my go to bevel setter until I tried JimmyHAD's Shapton Pro 1k. I liked that one better, so I got my own and that is now my preferred bevel setter. I always finish on the Naniwa SS 1k.
I too really like the Norton 1k, but I like the Shapton better. The Norton 1k works better if it is partially submerged because it is so porous. It requires more spraying to keep it wet. Neither the Shapton nor Naniwa need as much.

I like the Nortons too, They're usually the first one's you buy when you start this journey, and wind up getting lost in the HAD shuffle. After you've been around the block as they say, You always wind up coming back to what works...
We have assumed control !
