Actually I do take long trips. I am typically gone for 3 weeks in Israel every summer, and again for 10-14 days later on in the summer. I might be spending up to 4 months in Israel next year.

What I'm thinking about is a travel hone that is small but has the same properties as the hones I sharpen my razors on. No guesswork on the road.

Plus, it's just a thought-experiment. I get these crazy ideas and wonder if they'd work.

The trouble with Nanis is they clog up super fast in my experience and dish equally as quickly. So you'd need a credit card sized DMT to lap and clean your travel hone with.

May I suggest a small Thuringian would be better suited as it avoids these complications, and could even be a 'better' finisher in a very subjective sense.

I have a 4 x 1 Thuringian in it own fitted box. It stays in my toiletries bag and goes wherever I travel. Sad thing is I NEVER seem to need to touch up my razors when on holiday, but the time will come!

I use it as a finishing hone, works as well as my Eschers.

Ps, Im in Tel Aviv this summer.

I haven't found either of those to be the case. Hand rubbing cleans them quite well. And they get harder as you go up in grit; I've only had problems with dishing on the 1k and under.

My 3k/8k combo needs pretty regular lapping, and shows residual steel after each use. It doesnt come off that easily, so I have to use a nagura or just lap it to remove it.
