Either size is fine. It's really personal preference. Before you use any stone to sharpen a straight razor, It's surface must be perfectly flat. Read this:
Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Wiki
It's pretty much how I learned. Ask questions...
Also, What Gary is saying about doing some Preventitive Maintenance on your razor...Works. I used to do just that with a Barber hone. Touch up lapps once a week. It will literally keep your razor shave ready for a very, very long time, and he should know. Gary is a Barber.Last edited by zib; 12-27-2010 at 11:45 PM.

Thanked: 25The C12k is fine for weekly touchups.
When you go to flatten it, you'll note that it eats DMT plates for breakfast. For this reason alone it might be better to get a smaller one than a larger one. Flattening my 8x3 is considered aerobic exercise...

update on smoothness w/ the chinese brick
The brick was my only finisher until a recent asagi. Heavy grind Sheffields don't like the asagi, so back to the brick. Either Sham posted, or I hear from someone else that he did not dilute a slurry on his escher. I tried running a slurry until dry - I mean white chalky dry. First on an Ontario, then on 2 sheffields. The results were quite pleasing. I run circles more than x-strokes, using the x-stroke to smooth out any unevenness.
It was the first pleasant experience w/ a Sheffield for me. The Ontario was likewise very pleasing. 'Might be a technique to try or add to your quiver.

Thanked: 13245I don't even have to open the pic to answer that, There is not one "Expert" on this forum that can determine the qualities of a hone from a pic.. We sometimes like to think we can point out generalities but Natural stones are just that, natural and also naturally confusing from one to the next...
There are actually some of us HAD freaks that enjoy that allure of the naturals..
The good news is that you got it from Steve and if he were getting bad stones he would change suppliers...
