I saw on a youtube video that your supposed to put the stones on their sides while they dry, I do this but still just the 5k cracks. I think its a luck of the draw situation more than anything else.
My 1k has cracked no more than one tiny one, and the 400 is perfect. I find my 5k stone NEEDS to soak for at least 2 minutes, or else it loads up under use and does not hold water on the surface. They absolutely benefit from an extremely short soak in my experience.

I will never buy another chosera stone, they just need too much attention and babying, might as well use Jnats.

Its a major bummer ant it? My 150 dollar stone is looking very iffy now days. Good to hear some more Rochesterians! Enjoy man.
Welcome to SRP. Well my 1k is fine and I've had it for years. My 3k is also fine. Had it maybe 3 years. Had the 5k and 10k the same amount of time, and today I observe they have little spider web cracks beginning on the edge that sits up. (I store them in a cabinet on their sides)

So far the cracks are few, tight, short, and I'm hoping they don't progress. Time will tell. AFAIK Dylan (Holi) is still using that 1k that was cracking in 2011, but I could be wrong, I was wrong once before.

Glad I hung on to my Norton 4&8 single grits.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Rather than soaking for even a short time, which potentially can be forgotten and converted into too long of a time, you can repeatedly spritz the top with water prior to use. Just watch the surface and re-wet it a few times and you should be fine.
    sharptonn and rolodave like this.

ah unfortunately this does not work for me. After a quick soak they not only get better feedback, but they don't load up at all. If you sprits some water onto my 5k you can see the little bubbles all over the surface, and the water disappears. For me Chosera stones simply are not splash n go. After I posted the last response I went downstairs and did a knife on my 1 and 5k, I tried just using them splash n go but it simply doesn't work the same.

Notice that the 5k stone feels lighter than the 1k stone? Strange...
I lapped a little off my 5k with an atoma, some of the cracks came out so I guess they aren't super deep. I'm trying to damp cloth drying technique as we speak. Thanks for the input dudes.

I wonder if the new versions of this stone are less likely to have this problem, I have the older 25mm versions... you can get them on amazon for cheaper than the new smaller versions sometimes.

So after the bubbles and disappearing water, did you spray the hone again? And again?

yes indeed, the bubbles just don't stop, unless you feed it water for a very very long time. My 5 k is a very thirsty stone. I just checked it after lapping out some of the cracks and drying it with the damp towel technique and I must say, it doesn't seem to have cracked anymore! still alot on there though.
