I'll confine this answer to Barber Hones...

BHs do not use slurry. Slurry is an enormous topic that encompasses naturals, synthetics, slurry thickness, dilution etc... and don't apply to Barber Hones.

Barber Hones are designed to touch up a razor quickly, and are the fastest hones available. Using a Barber Hone involves several x-strokes, and no more, whilst using a slower natural to accomplish the same thing may require a hundred strokes.

To use one, simply put water or lather on it and perform 5-7 x-strokes. Then just strop and shave. You can maintain a razor a for a years with one.
