The beautiful thing is that you can buy a natural combination, and you won't have to choose between the two.

Haha. problem is, i can't find a natural combi that doesn't cost more than the two separate... at least in the sizes i can afford.
so the two options are
125x30 $61 shipped coticule
150x40 $40 BBW
I cut pieces of paper and cardboard and made a few simulated hones to see what i'd be comfortable with.
I don't think i'd be able to handle anything smaller than 124x30, and i don't think i'd want anything bigger than 150x40Last edited by dnullify; 01-26-2011 at 02:56 AM.

I honestly think you are severely limiting yourself with the price. I believe you'd do better to save up a bit more money and buy a hone that you really want rather than a hone that fits the budget you are setting.
1.5 x 6 inches is reasonable, but still shorter than I'd like. For the coti, starting at 5 inches, you'll be down to about a 4 inch stroke.

yeah. perhaps i should just start out with the BBW and see if i like the edge. that way i am getting something big enough to work with, comfortably within my budget so that i can later on afford something bigger.
thing is, i kind of need a hone, as my entire DMT set is gone out for warranty replacement/inspection, and i've got a couple of ebay vintage razors on the way. considering it took a full 2 weeks to get the returning of the DMT stones organized, i'm not optimistic about how long it'll take to get'm back.

I would also like to make you aware that coticule prices are going to go up this year do to deeper mining needs, etc. So don't hesitate after you shave some cash to buy the coticule you want. I would definitely save a bit but from what I've been told by all the experts on Coticule.be they like their small stones too.

Thanked: 2209Where do you live? Perhaps there is someone in your area who could loan you a stone to try out?

hahaha.
Fair point... just waiting on my spyderco sharpmaker to sell, and i'll probably go for a coticule. otherwise i'll try the BBW at SRD, and see if i like that style of honing anyway.
I do need a hone asap, as all mine are shipped off, and 2 ebay razors just arrived this morning! this is excruciating.

about how soon will those prices change? i may open up some more spending money tomorrow depending on whether my spyderco sharpmaker sells or not.
and how likely is it for BBWs to become popular based on this much anticipated report on coticule.be? i don't want to go and buy a $75 coticule, only to find out that the $40 BBW is actually capable of good results...
