DMT 325
I use a DMT 325 for lapping. I have had it for a while and it is now quite smooth. However, there are one or 2 imperfections on the surface. These are small but seem to scratch the hone when lapping. You can actually feel a slight drag when the hone goes over these spots. Is there any way I can get rid of these imperfections? They seem to scratch the hone when lapping, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the stones when honing.

If it's not affecting the hone, I'd leave it, but if it bother's you, you can try rubbing a screwdriver over it a few times, the shaft that is, back and forth. It may help smooth it out...

My DMT 125 had a 3/4" patch that was doing that, so I sent it back to DMT. I've heard they're really slow to take care of issues, but that once they get to it, they treat their customers well. We'll see...

Thanked: 25People say that visible scratches in hones are innocuous, but I'm not sure I'm buying it. A regular surface has got to be better than an irregular surface, and deep scratches could easily shorten the life of a hone. I'd do whatever I could to knock down that protruding bit of diamond.

I actually just mailed off all four of my Dia-sharps. I guess i hit bad luck, becasue each had something wrong with it. it took two whole weeks just to orginize shipping them back!
You can try and wear those spots away by breaking it in. I bought a giant "utility chisel" at home depot, and scraped off blue grip and rubbed it across the hone with soapy water with just the weight of the steel. smooths over irregularities quite well.

I had a really high diamond or two in mine as well. It left fairly deep scratches in whatever stone I lapped. I used an old, large, flat blade screwdriver rather forcefully in that area until it was fixed. The DMT works well now, and I have a very sharp screwdriver.
