Shoubudani and the Mud Hone
When I got home from work last night, I had not one, but two hones waiting for me. One from Max at JNS. A Shoubudani Asagi, one of the original honyama hones, like Nakayama, very hard, Level 5.
The other is unknown, found by LarryAndro from whipped dog. I will test it for him. Very interesting stone. mid range, not a bevel setter, but not a finisher either, so, I'll play with it, and post my results....Both stones are amazingly close in size, near 8x3 and 1 inch thick. The mud hone, is over 1 inch thick....
The Shoobie Doobie (Shoubudani) hone is not laquered yet. That's why it may look different on the sides. Enjoy the pics....Last edited by zib; 02-08-2011 at 03:53 PM.

Nice! Looks to me like you got a sweet deal on the Shoobie Doobie, I am glad you posted that you received it.
Let use know how it works out for you. I like my Oozuku on Slurry and then work until it breaks down and then refresh slurry and dilute. It's good stuff, I swear!

I will. It needs lapping for sure, and I asked Max if Poly is ok for sealing, in lieu of lacquer.
Too bad it wasn't ready, I needed to touch up a Wapi today. I used my Nakayama Asagi which leaves a very sharp, but smooth edge. It reminds me of a Coticule edge...We have assumed control !

Thanked: 2591I think the Shobudani is lacquered , they use what is called stone milk or something like that, that gives that whiter look on the sides. I think this is used only so seal the sides and not for reinforcement.
Stone looks great by the way. As far as the other stone it looks very similar to my Hakka, if it is hard enough it could be used as prepolisher before you jump on the shobudani.Stefan

Rich, how are you finding the SHoobie Doobie works? I imagine super sharp/smooth, but how are you using it? Off the 8k? Light slurry going to water? And just for fun, have you tried going straight to water to see how it behaves? Seems like Maxim advocates slurry breakdown, but much lighter than what you'd use on an Iwasaki-type stone. I really want one of those asagis from him!

I've had so much going on, I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I took a straight edge to it, and it definitely needs lapping. It's a nice hone, it has a sparkle effect to it...Once I get it lapped, I want to try several things.
Coming off an 8k, or 12k. Using it with just water, Using it with Tomonagura, and I want to try using the Botan, T/M, Koma, etc..Nagura system...We have assumed control !
