I recently picked this one up and it has the greenish dots and I have been told it is one of these brown ones. It is shown next to a BBW and then a boxed Thurigian for comparison. What say you all?

The pics are not all that great but it looks like one to me. They are very smooth stones that have a kind of mica sheen to them. The true test is to hone on it. I use oil on mine and it puts a very very fine edge on a razor.

The stone finishes just like an Thuringian or Esher, same type of slurry and a superb edge. So, yes I would think it is indeed a brown Escher hone. Thanks for all the input!

I guess you'd have to check the composition of the stone to see if it's really a Thurry, but you MUST HAVE an Escher lable for it to be an Escher. Going by look/feel/edge is really not enough for me to call a stone a Thurry (given that they are not a normal Thurry color) or an Escher.

As to the stone I can only magnify so much, no lab, but it sure slurries, looks and works like a Thurri. It also looks just like the other brownish ones referred to above. I was only following what I read here, but you are indeed correct, without a label it could not be an Escher.

Well, it could be, but it would be impossible to know. Given that Escher sold by color and someone (Jimmy?) has a price sheet with colors on it, and no one seems to have ever seen a brown stone labeled as an Escher, I think it is unlikely (but possible) that there are brown Eschers.

It is correct that the only reference, that I know of, to Eschers is the price sheet. I forget who first posted it but I thank them again. There is no reference to brown on the price sheet.

A couple of years ago I spoke with two Escher collectors who are not members of SRP. I did not ask them about brown eschers yet both said their best Eschers were brown and they do not know each other.

Doesn't mean there are brown eschers but it is interesting. I have one that I got from a very knowledgeable member here who knows his stones and he called it a 'brown escher.' I tend to agree with Dylan though, if it ain't got an original factory label there is no guarantee what it is.

Jimmy, out of curiosity, do they have labeled brown Eschers, or Thuringian type hones that are brown that they call Eschers? I remember you'd posted about those guys before.

Now that I look at that price sheet, I don't see "Escher" on it. Is there 100% certainty that is for Eschers?
