Thread: Eschers, that are brown

As I said in the above post. I've never seen a labeled Escher that was brown or an end label that denoted 'brown.' I believe the price list is for Eschers because, aside from separating the stones by the known end label colors, the list specifies prices for the "Barber's Choice" and the "Barber's Delight," both of which were Escher brand stones.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

this may help. if not then i may end up making another pics.
label doesn't say Brown escher.
Most of them called thuringian and escher just one branch of it.
this stone doesn't have name lets say brown escher, thuringian etc.
but color is brown and as fine as escher ..
used with oil mostly.
in picture stone in the middle.

Thanked: 19I guess it is best to be precise. I was being imprecise in keeping with the tone of the thread.
To be a Thurigian hone it would have to have been mined in that area of Germany. To be an Escher it needs a label.
I have been told these brown stones may have been mined in or around Vosgiennes(?) and were sold under the the names of Goldfisch Wetzstein and Fox Razor Hone. As best as I can tell, Vosgiennes refers to the Vosges mountain region in eastern France right near the German border and close to Strasbourg, southwest of the Thuriger area. In the picture hi bud gl posted above, there does seem to be a French stone shown and it looks brown. I am not sure if that is the one in the middle he is referring to or the one above it. Can't make the label out on that one.
If anyone has any more information, please share.Last edited by natchez; 03-08-2011 at 08:35 PM.

both middle stones does have exact label and on side of the stone says in English 'VERY FINE"(they are different colors brown and wet asphalt)
THE information above which comes from Vosges mountain is correct.(most likely)
I have to say this.
i am the person called them brown escher.
the reason i have done so is this.
when i got 1 stone(5 years ago) i did test the stone and it did perform same as escher or better.
color was brown, consistency similar to escher and label said very fine stamp on the side of the stone.
if you guys want to shoot me for this go head.PLEASE.
now rest of the information sorry i don't have it and cannot say.
hope this helps.
By the way if anyone knows exact name of that stone i would love to read it.
thank you

If it wasn't for the fact that everyone has Escher Madness, I wouldn't really care.
Being serious for a moment, to me, calling all Thuringians "Escher" is like calling all Sheffield razors "Wade & Butcher." They just aren't. Maybe we should call the brown stones Thuringian-like or something. After all, a corn razor is not a straight razor...
