Waiting for my Belgian Couticle slury stone to arrive and will see if it's any good for a "base" for sharpening. Grant it.. could be.

another option is to use powder chromium oxide and water should work great

Hornblende is usually black. There are many types of Granite. The soda ones are the grey and the potash types are more a buff color. There are many more.
