Default Stone you use with a Belgian Coticule

What kind of stones do you all use with your Belgian Coticule slurry stone? I got one in the mail and used it with a flat granite headstone. Produced nice milky white slurry and I used that on my new Henckels (use-vintage0 that I got in the mail today. Razor seems sharp enough, but who am I to know?

Belgian Coticule slurry stones are usually only used with Belgian Coticules. From what I can tell, you want to use the slurry stone in the same way that nagura stones are used with Japanese Natural whetstones. Personally, I would only use the Coticule slurry stone with Belgian Coticules, but I, too, would be interested to read about other peoples' experiments with the slurry stones.

I know some use a diamond plate. I think in general any stone that is harder than your hone stone would work.

I actually use my slurry stone on my shapton glasstones from time to time. BBW on 4k and coti side on 8K.

This stone is 2 parts. One side is yellow and the other a dark slate gray color, split about even for thickness. What is the dark gray area for?

    Gibbs,

Sometimes the grey/blacky-blue backing is just schist, other times it may be a 'Belgian Blue' depending on the vein the stone was cut from.

To be on the safe side until the backing is ID'd, I would just use the 'coti' side of the rubber.

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

It is slate and not Belgian Blue. Not very big but I gues one could use it as a touch up stone as well?

Went to the site listed and enlarged the picture. I do not think the dark side is BBW. It is schist. It is glued to the cuticle to prevent breakage. Coticules are fairly fragile. Schist should not be used to create a slurry. Of course, the same was said about BBW for several generations. Common knowledge is sometimes in error.

Guys, That is a Coticule No 1 Bout, not a combo bout. The gray side is unusable. It just supports the Coticule. It is Schist. The combo stones have a bbw side, it makes purple slurry when rubbed....
