Shapton 16k oops!
I received my NEW Shapton 16k glass stone today and got a little bit to excited to use it.
I am so programmed to using my soap/water spray bottle I used it on my new Shapton glass stone to hone a razor.
Did I just completely destroy my NEW Shapton?

I did rinse it under the faucet for a minute while wiping it with my hand.
How sensitive are these glass stones to soap?
Has anyone ruined there Shapton by putting soapy water on it?

Get in the habit of lapping after each razor or two, then rinse well and let the hone "air dry" like it tells you on the instruction sheet in the box. I only use about 3 drops of soap in my 8 ounce spray bottle and never had any soap issues.
Read the instructions.JERRY
OOOPS! Pass the styptic please.

Lap the stone after honing 1 or 2 razor's? Wow, is that really necessary?
The directions only specified NOT to wash the stone with soap. It didn't say do NOT hone with soap. ( Reason for thread )
So people do use soap/water in honing with a Shapton glass stone, just as long as you rinse with water ONLY.

Rinse well. You haven't destroyed the Shapton. You actually only need water with Shaptons. Shaptons are very different from other water stones in that they do get a few licks from the DGLP after use. This cleans them and keeps them flat. I also chamfer the sides a bit with a couple of strokes as I've observed a black line along the sides of the top. Not sure but it may be absorbing water differentially through the sides and expanding a bit upwards. Not an issue but that's why I do a couple of chamfer strokes.
You are using magnification to see what that 16k is doing, yes? Next try a 30k and the difference you'll see is as great as from the 8k to the 16k. Great stones!

I used my Shapton 16k with soap and lather for a long time
and it did not affect it.
You still have a very nice stone that you eventually will fall in love with
And btw. you don´t really need to lapp your 16k after every use.
I hardly lapp my higher grit shaptons (GS: 16k and 30k that is) at all.
They are very hard and keep their shape a couple of razors.
If you´re not a proefessional and use them in a normal way,
you shouldn´t be needing a DGLP or any frequent lapping.
Needless to say it does help improve it´s performance, though.
But I am very, very happy with the results I get with them without frequent lapping.
Ask Nakayama users, they don´t lapp their precious stones unless they need to,
as do I with my Shaptons. I don´t wait until they´re cupped (wich I don´t see coming),
but lap 'em every month of consecutive usageLast edited by Lesslemming; 02-25-2011 at 09:48 AM.

I have heard DMT diamond sharpener's can be used for lapping stones. What's your opinion on lapping Shapton 16k with DMT? I have DMT dia-sharp.

The DMT 8C (325) has worked perfectly fine for me.
I have the DMT 8F (600) as well, but it is not necessary.
I tried loose abrasive on a lapping plate and sanding paper.
But nothing worked as good as the D8C does
