Chosera
I was looking at the Chosera stones recently. I need more stones like I need a hole in my head, but it seems you all bought them for some reason. I've been perfectly happy with the stones I have The Chosera 1k is almost 100 bucks....!!! Really, Is it super fast? Better than all the other bevel setters I already have, King 1k, Nani 1k, Norton 1k, probably left out a few..
Then, look at their 10k, it's about 265.00, give or take...These Chosera's are as bad as Shapton when it comes to price. What I want to know, is from the Chosera users, Is it worth it? Are they really worth the extra money. What's the primary differences between the Chosera 1k and a Naniwa 1k, other than the obvious base, and thickness...I've also heard they're very bad when it comes to dishing, or am I mistaken....I believe it was Utopian who posted that....
Thanks...We have assumed control !

Thanked: 62First of all Im a noob. Only got a few dozen razors honed under my belt so I am not at all qualified to answer this question. I bought a 1k Chosera and recieved it last week. It was an impulse buy if there ever was one. I finally used it yesterday to set the bevels on two eBay razors. I really liked it alot. It appears to be much faster than the Norton 1k I had been using and seemed to put a much nicer edger on than the Norton.
Now this may all be my imagination because I wanted it to be better so take it for what it is worth. Hopefully someone with some valid experience will chime in.

i can say only that they will cut faster. thickens ,cracks etc i think you know.
worth the money?
i think Depends what is the purpose you want to have it?
are you honing everyday more then 3-4 razors?
i would say go head buy it.
less then that i don't think it is worth it.
hope this helps a little

I've only played with one a few times. I don't know about cracking or dishing (though I'd guess these would be much better than the superstones since they seem to be much harder). The Chosera is so far the nicest feeling 1k I've used (Naniwa superstone, DMT 1.2, King, Shapton). Some smooth feedback like the superstone 1k, but much less gumminess. In terms of feel of feedback, I'd put it between superstone and Shapton 1k. Hard and suction-y.
I loved the feel and would buy one if I had the money since it was as easy to use as my Shapton but felt better. My AD money is wrapped up in other ADs, though.

For the 1k and the ones under 1k, I think it is definitely worth it.
The 1k is hard (so it won't dish like the SS), gentle, and a quick cutter. The ones under 1k are the only stones in that grit range I've ever used that don't dish (I've only tried Norton, King, and SS under 1k).
I haven't used any over 1k, so I can't comment, but given how much I like the SS 5k and 8k, I wouldn't bother. There are other guys who have done little writeups on the higher grit ones; mixed reviews as I recall.

I have the 1K 2K 3K and 5K Choseras. I have honed about 100~150 razors on the 3K and 5K (the other 2 are newer and have only had a couple donzen uses). Of the 3K and 5K I have only lapped them 2 times (both times were a light lapping). Honing on the 1~5 and then my Suehiro 10K is a very short and very effective progression. I honed a razor the other day in like 10 minutes from start to stop. Quick and easy.
I realize that price is a bit more in the USA. But I paid no more than 6000 yen for one of them. Most cost only 4000 yen-ish. My 10K Gokumyo on the other hand was quite a bit more.
Zib, I think if you already have all of those stones then you don't need the Choseras. It would just be redundant and a waste of money. But its your dime.笑う門に福来たる。

Thanked: 4942To me, it is more a personal preference. I have a full set of both the Super Stones and the Chosera's and have honed a couple thousand razors on each. The Choseras have a harder feel to them than the Superstones. I wore out a Super Stone 1K and went to the Chosera 1K for every day bevel setting. I don't think it will wear out as fast........ I like it a lot. From a results standpoint, I have not found any difference between the Chosera and the Super Stones. I do like the Super Stone 12K better for finishing a razor than the Chosera 10K. The 10K will work, but the shave is a a bit coarser with it than the 12K.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 2591I have 600, 1k and 3k chosera and like them all. The 1k is pretty quick compared to king 1k for example. Dishing speed for razors is very slow, feed back of the stone is great IMO.
Just really nice stone to use.Stefan
