koma nagura
Just out of curiosity has anyone seen a legit stamped koma nagura for sale lately? It seems like they are extinct.

Thanked: 121Picked one up a few months back. They are difficult to find, and expensive, unless you compare them to an Escher or good J-nat. Then the price seems trivial.

I'll let Jim or any of our real Jnat gurus answer this officially, but I'm pretty sure koma are for sword polishing only. Not really used or needed on razors.

Not extinct, but demand is outstripping supply by a good margin. You have to catch them right as they hit the market. They're sometimes found on the Japanese yahoo auctions site, or you can try emailing Teshiba-san at Mandaraya.
As for their use on razors, they are indeed used, but they aren't expressly necessary. Nothing is expressly necessary, when you get right down to it. Koma are a fun bridge between your Mejiro/Tenjou and Tomonagura.

Oh you can use them on any blade. They are essential to sword polishing though. I think they come after chu nagura in the sword polishing progression. I think they are the highest quality nagura.
edit
Thanks Jim. so they are still being mined?

FWIW, I haven't gotten a Koma Nagura yet and my Jnat only progression works just fine, I haven't noticed anything "missing" in the edges...
