Thanked: 13247Using the "Long Swaty" as a Finisher
So I finally got around to trying a pet theory of mine out
I bought a Long Swaty Hone sometime back http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...aty-score.html
I got it all cleaned up and mounted it it on a 8 1/2 x 3 in piece of acrylic with epoxy just like my other finishing stones with a label and a clear view of the stamp...
Now a few weeks back, I honed up my "test" razor on the Norton 1-4-8 sequence and then used the Long Swaty just the same as a finishing hone... I did 15 laps with a swipe of lather light as a Butterfly's Kiss stropped it in (linen & leather only) and finally used it this morning for a full shave...
Now I wasn't really expecting anything but a good shave, I have used multiple Swaty's and other Barber's hones and they all give good shaves... But what I have after 7 hours is pretty darn impressive still smooth as can be and zero irritation a bit better than just "good"...
I think I am going to do a bit more experimenting on this one, I only did 15 laps on just leather (Illinois #827) this morning and a simple lather on the face (SRD Frankincense) followed by Alum block and AS
I am going to try the KISS principle this this razor and see where it goes...

Thanked: 1371I want to be sure if I try this that I get the pressure just right; Is that butterfly kiss with or without tongue?
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

When I was first starting out honing I used a Norton 4/8 and I had a Swaty (short) that I used for finishing because that was all I had. Water only and it seemed to do alright. I soon got a Shapton 15k pro and put the Swaty away though. I say I seemed to do alright because I didn't really know what I was doing then..... and sometimes I'm not so sure about now.

Thanked: 13247I can't feel any differences on my face Sham between the Swaty's I really think that the actual "Three Line" Swaty hone is a bit different in the feel when honing...
I think maybe the difference in the shave today was due to how I used the hone, not the hone itself, I don't know for sure though at least not yet...

I've got two long and one short. All the 3 lines of text. They seem to be identical to me but it is hard to be unequivocally sure.

Thanked: 13247Not the three lines of text Jimmy, the hone is actually stamped with the words "Three Line" it has always been a pet theory, that the thought that the three lines of text hones were "better" was mis-interpreted from the "Three Line" hone...
I have never found any difference between the two or three lines of text either, except for price you pay on e-bay

FWIW, I've had short ones with three lines of text (not actually saying Three Line) and short ones and one long one with two lines of text (not actually saying Two Line). I found that the ones with three lines of text seemed to give a better shaving edge. But, back then I wasn't as consistent or skilled at honing, so take that with some salt.

I've got one of those too. My theory is that the original Swaty, with the three lines of text , gained a reputation by word of mouth, among barbers. Swaty went to two lines of text when they moved to Marburg, Austria. Barber suppliers kept getting asked for "three line Swatys" so they made one named "Three Line Swaty". Not sure though.
