What is the difference between the Chosera 1000 and DMT DUO 600/1200 (Bevel Setting)?
When it comes to setting a bevel,
what is the difference between the Chosera 1000 and DMT DUO 600/1200? The DMT
wouldn’t need no lapping but is the Chosera 1000 a better stone to set the bevel
or is it just a preference? I have been told it is faster to set a bevel faster
with a DMT 1200 but I’m not sure this would be better.
I was just wondering what your personal
experience with the Chosera 1000 and DMT DUO were and their advantages.

I have not used a DMT Duo, but I have used a DMT1200 8 x 3 plate.
The Chosera is definitely on the faster side of the bevel setting spectrum, but the DMT is faster. The DMT is also, however, much more aggressive in the way it cuts. The Chosera leaves much shallower scratches and a much more refined edge. Furthermore, one can always raise a light slurry on the Chosera (Chosera slurry, or even slurry from a finer stone if you prefer) to increase the cut speed.
Having had both, I definitely prefer the Chosera. However, having both is always nice.

I haven't used the Chocera but I have a few diamond plates & can tell you that whilst the DMT's are fast, not all razors will tolerate them without chipping.
I will use DMT's for speed & convenience when restoring edges but I'm glad they're not my only choice for bevel setting. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 1262If you are going to get a duosharp, I would get the Coarse/Fine one instead. More usefull, you have the 325 side for lapping and the 600 side for resto work/heavy duty bevel setting.
I lust for a chosera 1k, but alas I am a cheap bastard.

Thanked: 2209One other major difference is that the Chosera 1K will last, much, much, much longer.
It is a large, thick, hard hone. Bigger bang for the buck that is also very effective at its job.Last edited by randydance062449; 04-15-2011 at 04:51 AM.

That's a good point Randy . People think diamonds are forever but the nickel substrate that holds em to the plate sure ain't

Too bad that the chosera is so darn expensive. Almost double the price as the DMT. Is there a 1k which is comparable to the chosera in speed and finish, but is a bit cheaper?

Bit of advice here that might help:

That's it, I'm pulling the plunge on the Chosera...£32 in the UK! That, and MWF soap are about the two only things that are cheaper in the UK...and finding Charnleys in the wild occasionally!
