The stone in the paddle box looks like it could be a Thuringian. The translucent stone with cracks could be a Turkey or Greek stone.

I agree that the paddle is more than likely a thuringian. The other I don't know.

+1, A Thuri and a Turkey. Nice score. Here's a a similar green Turkish oilstone. It's very fine stone too. These may need lapping..

    Have fun,

Those sparse and well spread little dots on the first one are very reminiscent of water of ayr stones - they may look superficially like thuringians. They give a 'silky' feel according to the box and were often used with oil.

Are those cracks in the second example, or more like glassy layers that are delaminating? If the latter and there are very fine bluish-green dots (a hand lens may be necessary to see them) then it could be a welsh oil stone. The glassy nature of the stone is similar to a CF, but the edge it gives is not quite as good - not a lot in it, though.

    Regards,
    Neil

no no dots on first one just did not lap it well it is very clean hone and soft too it feels a lot like Thuri and finish is more like 16- 20 k maybe more.

Second one no greenish dots ether and not like CF at all much harder then Charnley too

That rules WOA and WOS out then, Maxim - and just goes to show how difficult it is assessing hones by pictures! I did try the standard MOHS test on CF and Turkey stones, but could detect no difference - no doubt the test isn't refined enough, though. The step betwen 9 (corundum) and 10 (diamond) is a particularly large one, for instance.

BTW I reckon you will be lucky to find a thuringian of 16k, let alone 20k!

    Regards,
    Neil
