Please feel free to call it an Escher. It's the right color, size, type of stone, and it comes with an Escher box. The chance that it's not an Escher is very slight. If that's the case, do I have an Escher for you! It's also in far better condition than this one. You can also have it in either 2.5"x6" or 2.5"x(5"+1")... Until you make the choice you can only admire the box though, because either one will be 'genuine'

There are labels on these hones for a reason, and while it's possible to forge those too, when you see a couple real ones you'll realize it's probably not worth anybody's time to make a really convincing copy. Even at the prices they go for.

I agree, which is why I believe it's the correct box. It's not worth the time to find an old Escher box for a non-Escher stone. If it were a wooden box, I might think it was purchased separately to protect the stone. But no sane person would buy a trashed cardboard box for protection. It just doesn't make sense. Yes, it's possible that it's not an Escher stone, but the evidence says it is.

Those tiny boxed 5x1" Eschers aren't labeled either afaik. I also have a big unlabled grey Escher in a labeled cardboard box which was part of a barber's lot. I just think not all Eschers were given backlabels. Doesn't make them less of an Escher but I agree you do have to be careful with buying unlabeled Eschers (from gugi ).

So did anyone buy this stone or is it still up?

Edit, the above was done at work on my new laptop. Great box but I gave up in frustration because of the straight keyboard. I'm used to an ergonomic keyboard with the cap lock disabled and I watch the screen when I type. Learning curve on this new computer unless I get a remote ergo board.

It looks like an Escher but once the label is gone it is as gugi said, you have to try it and see how it works for you. If it is good it is good. Here is the thread I was referring to in my messed up post above :

Well, the stone arrived today and I was pleasantly surprised to find a matching slurry stone included! The seller didn't show it in the auction pix or mention it in the description so I wasn't expecting it. Maybe she thought the stone was broken and showing it would lower the auction price.

The stone and the slurry fit the box exactly so this convinces me even more that it is the stone that matches the box. I lapped her up this evening and put a finishing edge on a Revisor that had been honed on a coticule last week and shaved with only one time. I look forward to shaving with it in the morning. The hone sure acted like an Escher in use. Tomorrow's shave will be the final determining factor on this stone for me. If I like the edge it provides then the hone is a keeper.

Thanks again to everyone for their input. I really expected the hone to go for a lot more than it did so I just wanted a second opinion. Needless to say, I value your expert opinions.
