Thanked: 85Blue Escher hone?
Greetings,
I just picked up this stone at my local Flea Market for $5.oo. The cover says it’s a S.R. Droescher, Inc water razor hone. The instructions under the stone say it’s a J.G. Escher Sohn hone. I’m assuming that this is an Escher hone but I don't really know anything about them. It says “Light Green” on the cover but has “Blue” scratched into the stone, so maybe it's not the right stone for the box. What exactly do I have?
Also, does anyone know what grit this hone would be equivalent too? I have been using Shapton glass stones (1000, 4000, 8000 and 16000 grits) on my razors, so I’m not really sure where, if anywhere, this Escher would fit into my progression. Any information you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is most likely an escher. It is a great finisher, I don't use shapton so I don't have a lot of help for you, but I would try it after your progression. It would go very well in my progression though!!!

Thanked: 2591It says on the inside of the box that is escher, Escher used to make stones for Droescher.
@OP
Natural stobes do not have grit, this stone will work best after 12k level, before that it will be way too slow to be worth using.
If it says it is light green then it is light green, Blue could be the name of the owner.
Escher color grades are Dark Blue, Blue-Green, Light green, Yellow-Green.Last edited by mainaman; 07-12-2011 at 02:49 AM.

Can't accurately be sure from a photo but it looks very like my light green. I would bet it is an Escher. As mainaman said it fits into your progression after the 8k or maybe even the 16k. Experiment with it and see what works best for you.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Eschers are said to posess extremely good finishing capabilities.
Chances are high that yours will surpass the Shapton 16k easily.
I would definitely try it as your final finisher

$5!! That's not a great score, it's unbelievable!
I agree, it looks like a Y/G. Enjoy it, those are incredible stones!

I'd say that it is an Escher and you had alot of luck on your side in finding it for $5! Once it is lapped and shown both wet and dry, then the colour can be determined. I would have thought that it would be used after your Shapton 16K - most definitely after the 8K. I have very little experience with the Shapton 16K, having used one only once.

It looks like you got the elusive 5.00 flea market Escher....Great work......
Nice size too....Here's a table listing data on the most poplular hones. http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...mparison_table
The Escher falls in around 12k, That seems correct. They impart a buttery smooth edge. It's pretty much my go to finisher these days. You can come right off an
8k, The slurry will greatly help things along, Start with slurry, and work your way to water.Last edited by zib; 07-12-2011 at 01:53 PM.
