Mustard or Mayo
In the universal quest for finding the best hone
in the world I gave the Naniwa Snow White 8k
hone a test drive.
The web site description reads:
"The Junpaku 8.000 stone (also nick
named the snow white stone) is pure white magnesia
bond 8.000 hone with good polishing properties. It is
nick named the Snow White stone." Note that the
web site is confusing folk with 8.000 instead of 8,000
or the more common 8K. But a quote is a quote....
As you can see it removes steel with ease.
It is a bit harder than the Norton 8K (mustard slurry)
and may cut a little bit faster. When I say harder
I am saying it is harder a lot like the Chosera 10K
hone. A couple shaves off this 8k and a Norton 8k seem
to be nearly equal.
It does seem to leave a brighter mirror finish on
a couple of my old blades with lots of hone and
blade wear.
It is a marvelous hone. I expect that I
will use it to refresh my shavers. My
Norton combo will only be used when I also
need the 4k side.
Like the Norton I enjoy following it with
a finer finisher to perfect the final edge.
But that is another discussion.
I like it a lot.Last edited by niftyshaving; 09-04-2011 at 05:51 PM. Reason: Comment on 8.0000 in a quote vs 8,000 or 8000 or 8k

Niftyshaving, great post, thanks for sharing your finds
Mick, you know, Americans do things their own merry way
8.000 would mean 8K to an American, to me, it is simply 8. Back here, that is!
I guess the thoudand(sic) separator varies a wee bit around the world...Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 46I'm quite accustomed to working to three significant figures or more and a decimal point is a decimal point in any field I've ever dealt with. The thousand seperator I do consider optional, though it makes life easier.

Thanked: 46Cute.
The bore of this cylinder is 8.000 inches. How far is it across, eight inches or eight thousand inches? I spent time working with a ship's engineer and both are quite possible within the same engine. Your petty spelling mistake example does not allude to any possible missunderstanding of meaning.

Nifty--thanks for the hone review."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

Sorry for the confusion.
Look back and the "eight point zero..." was in quotes and
reflects what the vendor site said.
It is a fine 8K hone!
For anyone that needs a single grit 8K hone
this should be on the short list.
It hones fast, well and fine if you start with
a light slurry and dilute it bit by bit. The polish
is way up there and depending on your whiskers
you may or may not want more than a lightly
pasted CrOx on leather visit or submicron diamond
on felt. This week I am using an Ultra Fine Spyderco
ceramic hone as my last finish hone.Last edited by niftyshaving; 09-04-2011 at 05:53 PM.
