I have some trouble with that broad statement, would never say that myself because I can feel the difference between a coarse stone and a smooth stone with my hand. In my book, smooth=fine. But at the same time I do not fault Jim for quoting a study if he feels it is pertinent information to pass on.
    Alex,
I am not sure why you have problem with that statement, scientists from Tokyo University conducted research and posted their findings.
If a systematic research is not enough to prove a statement then what is?

The trouble I have with this statement is not its veracity but what it may imply to the inexperienced.
As some of us know the size of a particle can be meaningless without considering it's shape , friability & other factors I may be omitting.
It is great to simplify things but not always so great to generalise. Hardness can be a major factor but again, in the world of naturals there will be variation.

First year statistics: not finding something does not prove it does not exist.

Applies to samples of course, not to populations.

Daniel nice stone indeed, but I am not seeing the kiita(yellow). The picture
looks quite dark, so it might be that. Could you post another picture
    with better light?

    Good luck with the stone.
