You're welcome Rusen. As far as I know, the only unique feature is suita is renge. If it has renge, it is a suita or very surely a suita. All of the stones pictured except the sunashi have renge in them. Also, if it has layers of momji as illustrated in the shiro suita photo, it is most certainly a suita. So the last stone, the shiro, has layers, momji, su, and renge. I do not believe anyone would think this stone is anything but a suita. Nothing is 100% certain though!
Cheers, Steve

Yes, that's what I meant. Not all mines have all stones, and because of their uniqueness of each sub-layer, they name everything in such a fashion that, in the end saying suita, no matter which layer of it is, is enough. The tomae stones are the problem though, as there are 50 layers, and, both soft kiita and super hard asagi are part of it, so, if there is a difference between two suitas, comparing two tomae is a whole lot harder to do, they are a lot more diverse.

Thanked: 96Just ordered a Shobudani Karasu Tomae from Alex. He is fantastic. Told him what I wanted it for and the price range and he recommended this stone. Can't wait to get it. I have Shapton, Naniwa and Suehiro stones but wanted a Jnat to get that smooth shave. The man made stones can really put a sharp edge but I noticed when I got razors back from Doc 226 that he finished with Gnats, they shaved much smoother. I find it interesting Alex said to start off with slurry from the diamond plate first then work up to the slurry stone.
Will post pictures when it arrives.

Thanked: 246That is the way I do it. I usually don't go higher than a 2k synthetic before my JNats, then I either use a suita for mid range work or a fast Kiita. For finishing I go with a "diamond nagura" slurry then a tomo slurry or two - whatever the razor needs.

Thanked: 30Here are some pictures of my latest acquisition, an Awasedo Shiro Suita Toishi (dimensions ca. 180 x 65 x 27mm, weight: 790 g).
I've also lapped the backside of the hone as it was already very flat (saving the stamps ).
On kitchen knives (here a Kamo Kenyo) it leaves a very nice kasumi finish:
A soft and very (!) fast hone - just what I was looking for! Originally I intended it to be a prefinisher for razors, but surprisingly it leaves a very comfortable and mellow edge (albeit not as sharp as my Oozuku or Nakayama Maruka).
Cheers
Jörg

Thanked: 237this old jnat popped up on the bay last week. It has writing on the bottom of the base stating it was purchased in the 60's. it was cheap, so i bought it. arrived today and i think i struck gold. the true test will be on the hones later tonight.

Here are a few of my newer acquisitions.
The first two came to me from a request for koppa that could be used as barber hones. I don't know what they are.
This one cuts coarser but is super-efficient. I think I will use it for kanna.
This one looks awesome and is really hard and fine.
New shinden suita. Haven't been able to test it yet, but feels fine to the touch.
And a narrow Nakayama asagi. Grey with specs (goma?) and almost blue!

Both the asagi and the suita are very hard and very fine. I have never used such a hard, smooth suita. It must polish but I couldn't see any swarf. On the asagi, I could see minor streaks on a knife edge and barely a sensation of cutting on a kamisori. Can't wait to try the initial shave!

Picked up another JNat and what was labeled a Kuro nagura (think it's a Tsushima nagura, correct me if I'm wrong). The JNat is an Ozuku (kiita with nashiji and goma?). It's harder than my last JNat and from the limited times I've used it seems like it's capable of producing a fantastic edge. It's got a big inclusion, but it doesn't seem to affect the edge (yet). I cut the chipped corner off to make a tomo nagura.
Cheers,
Danm
