Here's a thread about the subject.
In the case of a normal auction if a stone is mentioned here the price can easily double. In this case someone could have been considering a Best Offer, do a little research and may have gotten it for Ł30-35. Now whoever did buy it had to make a quick decision and pay the full price to not get beat by another SRP member.
I had both in my watch list and I'm curious too but I was going to wait till they were sold to ask about them.

From the opinion of experts of whom I highly regard for their assistance both active and passive with my own learning curve in all things tonsorial, I can echo that it is not suitable for honing razors. Whether it can hone at all is another matter.
Even without the contributions made by the above, marble has been available for many centuries as a building material to man. If it were a fine enough honing medium at a speed that made it worthwhile to use without pursuing other forms such as coticule and Thuringian, it would be known.

If you google "Black marble" you'll find pictures like these, resembling the stone in the OP. Perhaps someone into rocks and minerals can tell whether the stone in the OP is really marble.
A_S did mention marble one time:

I don't know if either of these two hones are really marble. Marble is so common that if it was good for honing we would be using it already. I hope whoever bought it will let us know how it performs.Last edited by Piet; 09-24-2011 at 05:19 PM.
