    Default 1st time honer

Finally used the Naniwa 1k, 5k, 8k, and 12k hone set (and DMT) I bought last July. I was able to use two razors for 6 months without honing (they were last honed in June by Lynn at the MO meet up). I never honed before and was waiting until I had to before trying it. I used a pyramid method and all worked out fine.

I honed the two razors and couldn't wait till morning to shave with them, so I already shaved tonight with both. I don't think I'll wait that long before honing again LOL

I don't know, my wacker lasted like two years before honing... It was part of a rotation though..

    Dude,

If you gotta hone, you gotta hone. Sometimes even if the razor isn't pulling that much, you still get the itch to hone. Do it up.

I can't believe you bought that many stones and waited half a year to test them out. I test mine out like a kid at Christmas. "Why do they put so much tape on boxes"!!! lol

I am with Gecko on the no rush policy. I have a coticule ordered and on its way, and I am in no hurry to mess up working edges with my clumsiness. Fortunately, I have one in my rotation that is in desperate need of a touch up/finish. If I can gently take care of business there, I may not be using my new hone again for a few months.

The golf course isn't going to play itself. If I have extra time, that's where I should be. Of course, no offense to the Hone addicts here who have greatly aided me in my efforts to figure this all out and who will likely assist me when I struggle with this.

Well, I started a grad school and it has sucked up all my time LOL.

One thing I need is some kind of holder to hold the DMT in my hand when lapping. It is almost impossible to lap with my fingers in the way.. any suggestions?

Set the thing on the edge of the table! Use it there. Does it have the little plastic feet on the bottom? Those keep it from moving around.

    I rest my case.

Giz, Way to go. There's nothing like shaving w/ your own edge for the first time. I wasn't very good at it, but was proud to be able to use my own edges. I've improved a bit, but remember well, the thrill of accomplishment. Savor this one. (Glass raised to Gizmo)

Omega, thanks for the link, just ordered it!

Sharptonn, no feet on this stone, and it is thin, so my fingers were getting in the way when I was lapping.

Pinklather, you are so right, it adds to the entire shave experience!
