The side view looks like an oil filled two sided Carborundum in relatively good condition. A good hone for knives

OK, so looks like I got good hone for knife, what is great to as I was looking for new hone for my kitchen knives :-)

I have a similar hone that I use for my pocketknives. I did try it on a razor...it will set a bevel and do it quick. You will lose a lot of metal. Mine is too much of a brute for razors.

I have a small stone like that and the fine surface is very hard like you describe - not too unusual when you consider how hard some barber's hones are, being another example of a synthetic stone.
