Naniwa split
Last night I was putting away my stones after leaving them to dry after laster honing session.
When I picked up my Naniwa SS 3/8 it split in half, and I now have one 3K and one 8K stone.
I suppose this is caused by oversoaking the stone, in the beginning I used to leave it in water for several hours at the time and this have made the bonding brake.
What do you suggest?
Should I try to glue them back together or will it be better to make a base for each one and glue them to it.
I do have some 4mm aluminum I can cut to the right size.Need help or tutoring? Check out the .

I'd probably leave them as they are and use the Steelex hone holder if you have one.
They hold hones really well IMEHang on and enjoy the ride...

Thanked: 1936I am quite fond of the 2 part epoxy glues that is found in the push tubes. If it were me, I would probably go ahead and glue it to something to add a bit of support to the stones. I plan on doing the same to a vintage thuringian to give it support as it is only a little over bout 1cm thick with some bamboo or red cedar.
The stone holder like mentioned above is something that I can't imagine honing without: Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone Holder NEW | eBaySoutheastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

WOW. Soaking them is not recomended. So that is prob what caused the failure.

I got one of those, was thinking of maybe just glue them onto separate pieces of aluminum or hard plastic for support and get a second holder.
Yup, I quit doing that a long time ago, but at that point the damage was probably already done.Need help or tutoring? Check out the .

That sucks but atleast it was only across the bond line and not the center of the stone.

Sorry to hear about your problem Rune, but really you were kinda lucky. At least they split in 2 separate hones. I'd glue them to some backing, aluminum sounds great. I got one of those naniwa combos as well (1k/3k) - mine split straight across the 1k stone, in 2 places. Heh.

Ironically, last night I went into the garage to cut some aluminum supports and I brought my SS 1K to use for measuring.
My workbench is pretty full, so I placed the 1K on my belt sander (I know, stupid as he**) while I cut some pieces of wood for another project, when I had them cut I was just going to smoothen out the ends and turned on the belt sander, forgetting that I placed the 1K on it the stone flew off and hit the concrete floor.
What happens to a Naniwa SS 1K when it hits concrete? It shatters into a handfull of small, some very tiny hones luckily I just got my new Chosera 1K, so there is no crisis.
I took a chisel and removed the rest of the SS and will glue one of the pieces of the 3/8 to the base.Need help or tutoring? Check out the .
