Thanked: 194quick question about lapping norton 4k/8k with dmt 325
hey everyone,
I read the wiki on Lapping a stone with a dmt 325 but it didn't have to much info. I am just wondering if someone can give me a quick tutorial on how to lap my new norton 4k/8k with my dmt 325. both are brand new and dont want to screw it up. Any info would be great. thanks everyone!
shayne.

Lay the Norton on a flat, firm surface, wet the surface and grind the DMT against it. The 4K side will usually require more lapping as you go from a grainy surface to a more slick feel. The 8K side should not need much. Pencil a grid on both sides so you can see you are getting it flat.

the CC sized one i'm not to sure will work. i would think it will be hard to ensure that the entire surface is uniform....unless it covers the Width of the the hone which i assume it doesn't....correct?
If you are having to pass the CC DMT in all directions..ie Left to Right AND Back and Forth....to cover the whole Norton the grid will not help in showing Hills or Valleys in the hone as no matter what the lines will be removed the goal is to have them all remove at the same time. The advantage of having the 325 is that it is a known Flat surface that is of equal or greater size of the surface to be lapped so it ensures there are no hills or valleys......

hey, the card does cover the hone. even with a bit to spare on each side...so I was thinking a straight back and forth motion or figure 8s would work just fine

its possible but my thinking is... it still would give inaccurate results due to the fact that the grid will come off in ANY order as long as the DMT touches it....that said it will sure get you better than NO lapping.....but not sure it will truly lap the stone totally flat and may be worth a shot!

The smaller DMT is definitely not the preferred choice, but it may work. The problem with going back and forth is that you could easily put a concave surface on the hone. You might be better off to either switch to sandpaper on a glass or stone surface for the time being (assuming that getting a DMT 8C is not an option).
If your Norton is like mine, lapping off enough on the 4K side to get rid of the porosity while keeping the surface flat will be no picnic. I had to take about 1/8" off of mine to get it where I wanted it to be.
Whatever method you end up using, don't forget to slightly relieve (chamfer) the edges before use.
