    Default Reccomend me a Hone!

    G'day gentlemen.

Im seeking a Hone. I have a low budget but like to purchase a quality hone, to add to my current 1k-6k Jap Stone, so Im guessing I need a 12k hone?

Do they come in different sizes? I find my jap stone combo too thin to work with.

If you had a low budget what would you buy for your first proper razor hone (delivered to UK).

    Many thanks in advanced.

    Mark

I would recommend reading these three threads first, all three have good examples of using minimal equipmenst and costs and the fact that they work rather well, even for new honers...

These really point out some facts about honing, my understanding is that the Norton hones are rather hard to come by in the UK but the Naniwa's are much easier either will work ...The Norton 4/8 or the Naniwa SS 3/8

The hones you mentioned are a little over my budget.

What are welsh slate stones like? 8-10k aparently :

I'm partial to the Norton 4/8 myself, and as Glen mentioned, the Naniwa line works to, 3 or 5k, and 8k.

1st of all what's the 1000/6000 jap stone? If its a King Ice Bear then its a decent stone and if you are finding it too thin then its a technique thing. I'm not sure by thin you are referring width then you need to learn X strokes and if its depth then just persevere as most stones are similar or get a stone holder.

My preferred progression at the moment is a king 1000/6000 followed by a finisher usually a Naniwa 12K superstone. However a Chinese 12K or one the green or purple welsh hones linked above should work well if funds are tight.

    Nic

    Ahhhh

The WHIG's have just recently started being used by the SRP guys I have all three and they work just fine...

BUT !!! (and that was a big but

These are not the easiest path to take, I tend to recommend what a new guy will most likely gain success with...

I have a similar setup to you, MSkiba. I'm new to honing, but I already had a King 1k/6k. I added a Llyn Melynllyn, a Welsh slate, and am quite happy with my progress. I'm now shaving with edges I've honed myself, and my face is pretty comfortable with it.

I think people will advise you that the jump from 1k to 6k is too large, and they're probably right, but if you already have a 1k/6k and a low budget, you could do worse than a Welsh slate as a finishing stone. (Note: advice from newbie here, pinch of salt, IMHO, YMMV, and all that.)

You might want to let us know what the 1/6 is because I was not getting the impression that this is a King 1/6 and that would make a huge difference in my recommendation too...

I will start by saying the guys above have WAY more experience than I BUT.......I started in JaNorton and LOVE my norton 4/8. I think starting with that stone has helped me with all the other stones I have now gotten.....stupid HAD!!!.....so my vote would be grab a 4/8 you'd be surprised (I know I was) how great a shave you can get off an 8k

    Thanks for reply's!

Yes it I have a king ice bear one. I also have a nagurastone with it. Im after a finisher, something like 10k or 12k. Im new to honing (hones 2 razors so far) but have plenty of experience restoring broken edges on carving tools/very sharp knives on wet stones so have an advantage there. Im not after anything easy, just a good stone that will work, but so many out there I need to be picky due to budget restraints.

    So
