    Default Need to Know

I am new to SRS and have only recently got my sr, strop and brush + creams etc. I realise I will need a hone at some stage, probably sooner rather than later. I found what I think is a hone in my dads old tool box and am wondering if I can restore it and use it. It is beige in color(but pretty grubby) and has a P on it with a fish through the gap in the P. Under this it has PIKE written. There is also a caption that says "norton abrasives" just to the right of the P, it could be enclosed in the outline of a knife, I'm not sure as it is very hard to read. The hone is not in great condition as the tool box has been its home for at least 25 years if not more and could be a lot more. My dad passed on over 20 years ago so I can not ask him. I would hope someone could identify it and if it can be used as a razor hone give me a few pointers as to wheather it could be restored and used. The stone is 20x5x2.5. I enclose some pics:

Just looking at the pictures, it looks like a norton oilstone. If it is, I would say it should be used for your knives & not razors. Find a veteran shaver near you and let them look it over, they will be able to confirm it. A barber stone for touching up a straight razor will feel silky smooth, like talcum between your fingers. No matter what, it was your dads...priceless.

yep deffinatly looks like a norton stone. I would recomend getting a cheap barber hone from the bay or in the classifieds section. they are great for touching up razors. If you are planning on doing full bevel resets you will want to look at a stone set that inclludes a 1k, 3/4k and a 8k. these sets will be great tools and are a lifelong friend as long as you treat them properly. check out this section and you will find endless amounts of info. goodluck..pm me with any questions

I have a norton India stone that looks about that color.
I think tis something like 600 stone, so I would not use it for razor. (As was mentioned before.)

Yep, it's made by Norton, problem solved.

Wow, appericate all the replies. So I could use it for knives but not for a straight razor. It is very smooth, hardly abrasive at all, in fact when I first came across it I thought it was a lump of iron. I'll have a look at one of the newer Nortons, the 4/8k combi seems to have a good rep or indeed a barbers hone, had not considered that.

The girl in the pic, well thats the mistress, just hope the wife does not see this.

I also have one in a double stone. A little to ruff for razors and also very difficult to clean!
