Oh and why is it called a yellow lake stone when its a dark color
It's a Welsh hone, a Llyn Melynllyn which means Yellow Lake in Welsh. It can be used with water or oil
So it would work as a finisher?
Unfortunately, the mine owner used the name of the area as a 'brand' - the problem is that he often used hones from other mines and there are at least four varieties including the original purple slate. Some are very good, some are pre-finishers - hard to tell until you try! As with most natural hones of this type that state 'oilstone' in the description, a fine oil will give a slightly better edge than water.

I use mine as a pre-finisher but that said you could shave off of it, well that my experienced with it, and i use oil with mine.
Can you use it as a finisher, probably you have to experienced with the stone but highly possible.
I have to confirm what Neil already said. I fact stone which comes from the YL quarry is more like novaculite than slate.
Recently I was talking here about special measurements of original YLs can you tell us what exact size is yours?
Are you sure about 2.7? that would be pretty short hone.
Sorry 7.7 is the length
Yep that sounds better. Look on that stone how it is made. It could help if you will be looking for another one like that. Enjoy the hone.
I have one of this brand. Very fine, probably near a good Thuringian with water. It used to be purple, but now it's black, and the slurry from purplish it became dark too. Strange thing. But I don't really mind. I like it. I think, their purplish variety is far more common than the rest of the old yellow lake named hones.
I have always avoided them because of the name "Yellow Lake"....... To close to "Yellow Snow".... Which then it would be easy to identitfy by the smell.... Sorry, I don't get out much...... Vivid imagination really..... It's not healthy.....
was that inches or cm?
Inches I may live in Canada, but I'm still American
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace my new yellow lake. It has a stamp of salmen, now, I'm not sure if it's the "support genuine British labour" or a salmen one, as far as I know, they are different companies. It doesn't look like a classic purple one, I hope it's one of the other rarer kinds. I will soon test it and post my results.
Sorry to ask Vasilis. Do you have stamped purple YL? So far I have not seen one therefore calling it "classic" comes to me as surprise.
Otherwise congratulations to your new hone. If you will be sealing the sticker/decal be carefull if you use nail warnish or something simmilar it can damage the sticker/decal.
I will do my best to seal it but I'm not sure with what. I was indeed thinking to use nail warnish or whatever its called, but if anyone has a better idea how to do it, I would be glad to hear it. IF it is actually a salmen one, and not just a sticker. The stone has not yet arrived, but it soon will. And I hope it's not the classic purple variety.
If it is purple I am willing to swap it for grey one.
I've already have a purple one in good condition. What are their differences? And not only the grey, all 4 kinds, if we could categorize them, which is the finer and the coarser, the faster and the slower?
Categorization would be nice. I have 3 YSLs
A few minutes ago I won a 205x48x26mm YL in a yellow box :)
If that is the one from UK then congrats it is nice stone.
Yes it is but I haven't seen the actual stone yet. Shipping is twice the price of the stone unfortunately as I expected. I've been meaning to get a full size YL for a while.
Nice one excellent price regardless of shipping cost.
I really tried not to bid and actually managed. Sounds like my HAD is started to get under control.
It's described as being a hard dense black stone. I've tried YLs before and currently use my Inigo Jones DT in my honing progression. They do a good job.
Just looked at the final price and have to say well done. Less than half what they lately going for.
Thanks. It didn't occur to me to ask for it. They are pretty common so I figured I would get one sooner or later for a nice bargain price :)
The seller refunded me £1 of the £14 I paid for shipping :) It's actually the standard cost for signed for small packages of that weight, but it seems to hurt more when the item is cheap :D
This YL stone is purple and feels rather smooth, very similar in colour to my La Lunes. Once it's lapped I'll take some pictures.
Now that hurts. Finaly purple marked YL was on market and I missed it.
Piet could you please take and post some pictures as is now before lapping? Please? Would love to see it. Regards

I have not tried oil on my LM but it seems to work well with glycerin and water.
I will rate this one in the pre-polisher category.. This one comes from Neil.
Jerry
You were just in time, I was about to start lapping.
In the room I took the pic the stone looks grey but in any other room it looks purple.

Piet please can you show a picture after lapping but on different background. As this is the purple one I want to see the real colour. I know this is your traditional background but it looks like it makes everything in the picture more red looking. Thank you.
It looks more purple than the one I currently have, although the slurry is purple. The one with the salmen sticker I bought a few days ago came, but I didn't have time to go to the postal office. From Monday, if it's purple I will post pictures.
