Doesn't necessarily eliminate the CrO but can give it a different role. Explanation below:

Chromium oxide (hand american pure stuff) still gives a sharper (but still smooth) edge than any japanese stone I've used.

I think it also gives a better edge (my opinion) than 0.25 diamond, just as sharp, less harsh, so I think there's some extra links in what you're using.

A natural stone shave is a different shave, not necessarily a sharper shave. A very fine stone will slightly improve the sharpness of an edge coming off of a shapton 16k, but it should create a gentler edge that will make fewer weepers when sharp.

To me, though, it is still always improved with fresh chromium oxide powder on balsa. Even following an antique japanese barber hone that is super super fine.

I don't know if the mine matters so much as the fineness and the grade of the stone. If you're going to delve into the details, buy from someone who understands razors and ask them their opinion about where a stone will fit in your rotation, or you run the very real risk of playing with a very expensive stone that gives you results that are not as good as what you're used to.

If you want to do the j-nat only routine with no powders and nothing but a leather strop, though, you can do it if you have a fine stone, and if you're willing to raise a slurry on it once in a while, you could take care of an already prepared razor indefinitely on it.

Just another opinion in the crowd (though one shaped by looking at edges through a microscope to confirm what i was feeling).
