Hone ID? Antique Escher/Thuringian or Coticule
Can someone help me ID this old hone I picked up an estate sale awhile back for $5. Believe it is a natural stone and has a yellow side and blue/gray side. It measures 7 3/8 in X 1 6/8 in X 3/4 in. Lapped it with my DMT and it works well, better than my Nortons. It came in the Craftsman box shown and says it is "silicon carbide". It also has a name in old script on the end and believe it says "John E Cow". Didn't notice that name until I took the picture today. Have done some research, but have not seen one quite like this one. Don't know much about the older hones and hope someone in SRP can help me ID this. Thanks and hope these photos help.

Lot's of character in that stone. Definitely a combo coticule.
A steal at the price you paid.

Thanked: 443Much, much nicer than the hone that was originally in that box. If you're not familiar with coticules, search this forum for more info and also check out http://www.coticule.be/home.html, which is dedicated to them. That's a very special stone you scored!

I thought it might not be the original box. It just didn't seem right even though it fit. Thanks for the info and I'll check the web site in Belgium. Great news and appreciate the feedback from all of you that have responded. I guess I found a really good hone at a great price. Now I'll need to watch all the videos on how to use it! Already tuning up several razors that I thought were sharp. It seems to really give you a sharp edge quickly.

That coticule is a keeper. You'd have better odds winning the lottery than finding another one for that price. I bet the edges you'll get from that stone will be unbelievable.
