Thanked: 45Green hones
I've picked up another green sharpening stone and it sure is pretty. While cleaning the box I found it marked with the year 1878 which adds interest. I've taken pictures of it next to my other stones that are green for comparison. Any idea of what I have here? Input on all three stones would be appreciated. I was thinking the middle stone to be a Llyn Idwal and maybe the 1878 stone too? I'm very curious about the top stone in the last picture, notice that it does have a small patch of red on the side...Charnley Forest?
Thanks,
Matt

Top two in last picture look like CFs to me. Your new one I can't really place, it reminds me of Turkey oilstones. Let's see what the others think

Agreed, The middle one looks like a Charnley. You need to re do the top pic, The lighting is making it hard to id the stone.

Thanked: 45Thanks for all the responses. Here are more pictures, it's hard to get the correct lighting but they all have a green color or grey/green to them. I also put a Turkey stone in there for comparison.

Thanked: 45I lapped the stone with the red spot and I'm sure it's not a Charnley now because of how soft it is. It's a bit harder than some thuringians I have and smells earthy, I should add that all stones have a white slurry.

Indeed they are nice hones. I'd say that middle one is a Charnley, of the drab variety. The white and green one reminds me of another I saw in a post that the OP believed to be a Cutler's Green, which of course no one can positively identify. Then again it has orange spots like some Tam O'shanters. It is similar to this Tam in the 8th post down.
I recommend you take a razor to all of them and shave test.Last edited by Scipio; 07-21-2012 at 03:52 AM.

Thanked: 202I would agree with the bigest one as CF. The flakey one looks like marble or jasper type hone. The last one I would say Thuri type. What are the measurements?
