Thread: Guess on Grit?

I found an old Norton for sale. Approx 8"x2". Any guess what the grit is? Any info on how to get it lapped? Thanks.

I will guess that it's an india stone.

I think the course side is about 220 grit, and the Fine side is about 800 but I could be wrong.

Lapping can be done with any flat base, wrapped with with good 3M wet paper of 220 to 400 grit. Under running water, a little dish soak or Simple Green helps to make the lapping go smoother. Some of these stones are impregnated with a petroleum type of lubricant, throughout the stone, I cannot tell from your photos.

I hope you are not intending to use this stone on razors, the grit is most likely well under 1000. If i had better photos of the sides & ends, I can most likely tell you the exact nomenclature & grit.

They aren't rated like you'd think. Michael's estimates are probably pretty close. It's probably Fine and Coarse. I'd have to actually feel it. You can lapp it with some wet sandpaper, 220 grit to start, and take it up to 1000g on a flat surface, A large piece of tile works nicely, unless swmbo let's you use the countertop....

I don't have enough $$ to purchase a dmt right now so i put some 3m 180 grit on my ceramic stove top and lap the stones on that, then move to the 400 grit 3m paper, works great!
