I've always wondered if there were any American slates that would be good for honing. I know that around here, the slate and shale are supposed to be rich in silica. Only problem is getting to it(damn glacial dumping ground).

After work i should post a picture of a rock i have made knives sharp with that i found
in a pile of rocks. The only flaw it has is that it has one corner that's a different grit.
but i stop using it cause i don't want to flatten it all the way and make it lose.
The cool rock look.

I have gotten some purple slate as well, after lapping the surface has a glossy-satin look, almost reflective. I use mine after my coticule sometimes when the razor is being cross. Also got some small pieces i use great for knives. Slow but fine grain. But all naturals are different, next slate i pick up might be worthless.

A wonderful rock i found.
Here is a rock that is not done flatting.
but Well i stop cause it has a nice look to it.
but then again i might finishing flating it so i could use it for
razors. I have used the flatten area to makes big chef knives seriously sharp.
only flaw it has is by the saddle soap there is a spot that's mediun.
I picked it off the ground due the color. Then heavy weight of 5.5 pounds.
made me want to find out the grit of the rock so i started flatting it.
cool rock pile find it's a keeper. there are nice rocks to find in the world.
I like how the sides where just shaped by natural i would never cut it with a saw or chisel.
