You want some good old American Slate? Here's what you do. Go to Wurtzboro New York. The is an old abandoned railroad tunnel that goes under the state highway. The tunnel is almost a mile long and is rock cut. The entire tunnel is cut through slate. if you go in there are huge chunks that have fallen from the ceiling and it's there for the taking by the ton. Of course if you go in and a chunk falls on you don't blame me-har har.

I've always wondered if there were any American slates that would be good for honing. I know that around here, the slate and shale are supposed to be rich in silica. Only problem is getting to it(damn glacial dumping ground).

After work i should post a picture of a rock i have made knives sharp with that i found
in a pile of rocks. The only flaw it has is that it has one corner that's a different grit.
but i stop using it cause i don't want to flatten it all the way and make it lose.
    The cool rock look.

I have gotten some purple slate as well, after lapping the surface has a glossy-satin look, almost reflective. I use mine after my coticule sometimes when the razor is being cross. Also got some small pieces i use great for knives. Slow but fine grain. But all naturals are different, next slate i pick up might be worthless.
