It's like candling an egg, only you use a stronger light-source.

It means flattening the working surface of the hone; so it stays uniform throughout the stroke of the razor.

Use the "Advance" search button above right, insert keyword "lapping a hone or stone" for a list of threads on the topic.

Lapping is the process of making the stone flat, with sandpaper or diamond plate etc.

This one was a pain to lamp. It took an eternity to lamp through that old label and all that urethane!

No, seriously. What Hirlau and Martin said. Lots of info. A well-worn dmt 325 is my flattener of choice!

That's because you were using a wimpy lamp. This is what you need:

    Hi breakofdawn,

Lapping a stone is the process of making the stone as flat as possible to make honing more precise. Here's a link to gssixgun lapping Nortons. I think he uses two different DMT's if I remember correctly, but you can do the lapping with just a DMT8c325. Sandpaper can be used, but the DMT is pretty much the preferred method for most here because you don't have to lap it and they last a long-long time. YouTube - gssixgun Norton 4k 8k Lapping
    . Hope this helps!!

    Good Luck and Great Shaves!!

    Best Regards,
    Howard

    Hi breakofdawn,

I'm just chiming in to apologize on behalf of decent people everywhere for a couple of the clowns who posted really awful jokes here. Clowns, you probably know who you are!
