His videos really are the best...He covers ALL systems and really gives good explanations of what each stone is doing.
Anyway, I just bought a Coticule as I was looking for another option to fit in between my King 1k (Bevel setting) and Chinese 12k (finishing). Right now I'm using a Norton 4/8 which works wondefully, but I personally am "on a mission" to condense the bulk of the honing down to one single stone. At some point I'm also planning on getting the rest of the Naniwa Super Stones (already have the 1k)...I figure it's always good to have a few options as to how you want to progress through the honing process...

One stone honing is great, but you need the right stone. Even Glen mentions this during his C12k honing video. Cnats, Phigs, or C12k's vary too. I think Glen went through 4 of them before he found the right one.
Most natural stones vary greatly from stone to stone, Escher being the exception to the rule, and pehaps the new Zulu. Coti's and Jnats have the most variables. That's why I suggested sticking with the synthetics, and maybe adding a 8 or 10k stone. We have assumed control !

Wow, thanks for all the answers.
I will look at Glen's videos ASAP.
I am not really looking to cover everything with one stone, but I was more thinking of a good progression. I was able to shave before off the King, with extensive use of CrOx pasted strop. Then I got C12k and shaves got better without the need for CrOx.
Main guideline in my thoughts was progression, but I might be off.
Cheers,
Rob

I agree with Shooter here. Get the Naniwa's. I like using progressions myself. Progressions are good. Gssixgun use to do the Nani progression, not sure if he still does. I have all the Naniwa's, (among other's) and as of late, started using the Shapton GS stones. If I'm using the Shaptons, and I have to re set the bevel, start from scratch. I'll use the Chosera 1k, then hit the Shaptons, 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k, Then the 16k. I don't really care for the edge off the 16k, so I dial it back a bit with an Escher.
You can do the same with Naniwa's. 1k, 3k, 5k, 8k, 10k, and 12k. I wind up doing less work on each stone.
I also like the edges i get doing that way. Of course, YMMV. A lot of members, will use a bevel setter, then a 4k and 8k and a finisher, or a bevel setter and Nani 3 and 8 or 5 and 8, then the 12k.
It's really a preference thing. Like the Natural stones.Last edited by zib; 11-05-2012 at 11:29 PM.
