Thread: OK fellahs...Naaaamme thaaat hooooone!!!!

So here she is. A very hard olive green stone. Not similar to novaculite. Not similar to slates I've had. The deep scratches visible in some of the photos were 36 grit sil carb derived. The stone was reasonably flat, but it finds DMT's mildly amusing. This little black stone came with it. I know that doesn't mean they're a matched pair, but I do think they go together. It's a water stone. At this early stage in owning it, it seems to be a finisher. It doesn't smell like anything. I mean nothing. I even went so far as to risk silicosis with a light whiff of straight dust..nothing. Anybody got a guess? And sorry to Martin, who will be dissatisfied with my photos. lol. They're macro...but my camera is something like 15 years old. That might be the issue. lol

I was thinking that as well Richard but never heard of a Hindostan that is Olive green?
So Justin does it have layers on the sides?

You know what it reminds me more of than anything else? A ceramic barber hone. If not for the trapezoidal shape, and totally not standard size of the thing, I'd say that's what it was. I bought it thinking it was the top half of a coticule. I had imaginings of a nice paddle hone, with this guy as the centerpiece.

I guess it could be an LI..I really don't know. I've only seen a few pictures here in the forums. Never held or honed on one.

It's pretty consistent for color. It's got a few darker swirls in there in a few spots. No layering that I can see. No saw marks, no chisel marks, no markings at all. I thought they used LI's with oil though. This stone didn't have any oil on it at all.

JimmyHAD thinks it kryptonite, but that can't be, cause I feel fine.

The stones accompanying it are hindostan(I think), blue thuri, and a coticule. The possible hindos could also just be layered sandstone. They don't match any UK description for hindostan that I've read, aside from the layering.

This one does not look like a Jnat at all. Jnats have saw marks on the sides.
Test it with some acid (just a drop) if it is a synthetic of some kind, if it is it will start to foam at the spot and smell.

Your probably right, sure would explain why its so hard to lap.
The stone with the layers is a Hindostan.

8.25 inches long, 3/8 thick, and then 1 5/8 wide at one end, and 1 15/16ths at the other. Does it matter what kind of acid? I don't happen to have any on hand.



But for clarification: I made no mention of japanese honing stones in this thread(till now). This is just a stone I found, and thought we might have some fun guessing about it. Since I've been thinking on a Jnat, ofc my mind would wander in that direction. Just like when I posted a coticule and asked if it looked like a CF. I wanted a CF, so suddenly everything looked like a CF. lol. Anyhow, thanks for playing fellahs! I do know that there is NOTHING about the appearance of this stone that suggests Jnat, other than the color. Since Jnats seem to come in most colors under the sun, you must give me that concession.
